Where cruise ships dock in Reggio Calabria
Cruise ships tie up inside the port of Reggio Calabria, at the northern edge of the city centre, at the end of the Lungomare Falcomatà. The port is run by the Strait of Messina Port System Authority (AdSP dello Stretto), which also manages Messina and Milazzo. Ships up to 200 metres long enter without special requirements for the manoeuvre, according to local press reports from August 2026.
Reggio receives small ships. The Port Authority describes it as a port of call for luxury, yacht-style and expedition lines. CruiseMapper lists six calls in 2026:
- 3 June: Le Bougainville (Ponant), 08:00 to 15:00
- 10 July and 4 August: Wind Surf (Windstar), 07:00 to 15:00
- 26 August: Renaissance (CFC), 07:00 to 18:00
- 3 October: Le Champlain (Ponant), 08:00 to 16:00
- 7 October: Le Boréal (Ponant), 07:00 to 23:00
For 2027 the same schedule lists 15 calls between April and October, with ships from Ponant, Windstar and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. On 4 August 2026 about 230 to 240 of the 292 passengers of the Wind Surf went ashore, some to the museum, some to Scilla.
New cruise berths and terminal
A cruise terminal for Reggio has been designed but not built. The project, presented in 2023, places a single-storey building of about 1,000 m² on the Banchina di Levante, with a budget of about €5.5 million. The technical and economic feasibility project was submitted in January 2026; in April 2026 the architect of the design described the work as financed but on hold. In September 2026 the Port Authority was completing the design to convert the Banchina di Ponente for larger ships, with works worth €40 million and a stated target of the first ships in 2027.
How many cruise passengers visit the Strait of Messina
The Port System Authority recorded 742,526 cruise passengers and 254 calls by about thirty cruise lines in 2025, a record. For 2026 it expects 8% more passengers and over 300 calls. The figures were presented at a press conference on Messina's cruise traffic and are not broken down by port: Reggio's share is a few calls a year. Across Italy, Risposte Turismo forecast 15.4 million cruise passengers in 2026.
What you can reach on foot from the cruise port
The museum, the Lungomare and Corso Garibaldi are all within walking distance of the port. We calculated the distances on OpenStreetMap footpaths at 4.5 km/h. The ranges depend on the berth your ship is assigned.
- National Archaeological Museum (MArRC) and Piazza Indipendenza: 700 m to 1 km, 10 to 15 minutes.
- Reggio Calabria Lido railway station: 650 to 850 m, about 10 minutes.
- Arena dello Stretto on the Lungomare: 1.1 to 1.5 km, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Piazza Duomo and the Cathedral: 2.1 to 2.3 km, about 30 minutes. From the museum it is about 1.4 km along Corso Garibaldi, the pedestrian high street.
Opening hours of the museum and the Riace Bronzes
The MArRC is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 20:00, last entry 19:30, and closed on Mondays. Tickets cost €10, €2 for visitors aged 18 to 25 and nothing under 18. Entry is free on the first Sunday of the month. The museum estimates 1 hour 30 minutes for a self-guided visit. To enter the Bronzes room you pass through a filter room that protects the statues. Check the day of your call: in 2027 four of the listed calls fall on a Monday.
What needs transport
Scilla and the villages of the Area Grecanica are outside the city and need a train, a car or an organised excursion.
- Scilla: about 23 km by road. Regional trains from Reggio Calabria Centrale take 25 to 44 minutes and cost €2.70 (October 2026). Reggio Calabria Lido, 10 minutes from the port, is on the same coastal line: check on Trenitalia that your train stops there.
- Pentedattilo: about 33 km south-east, around 40 minutes by car. The abandoned village sits under a rock shaped like a hand. The nearest station, Melito di Porto Salvo on the Ionian line, is several kilometres away by road, so you need a car or an excursion.
Three plans for 3, 5 and 8 hours ashore
3 hours: the Bronzes and the Lungomare on foot
With three hours you can visit the museum and walk back along the sea. The Athena ETC city tour lasts 3.5 hours, so in this window you go on your own.
- Walk from the port to Piazza De Nava: 10 to 15 minutes.
- MArRC and the Riace Bronzes: 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Lungomare Falcomatà south to the Arena dello Stretto and its Athena statue: 15 minutes.
- Walk back to the ship: 15 to 20 minutes, leaving at least 30 minutes of margin.
5 hours: Reggio City + Museum Tour
The Reggio City + Museum Tour lasts 3.5 hours and combines a walk through the centre with the visit to the Bronzes. A certified local guide leads it, in Italian or English. It starts in Piazza Duomo, about 30 minutes on foot from the port: Athena ETC also runs private transport to and from ports for members, on request (price not published). Price from €85 per person, with 25% off for groups of 6 or more.
8 hours: Scilla or Pentedattilo
A long call leaves room for one excursion outside the city plus a walk on the Lungomare. Both experiences start in Piazza Indipendenza, next to the museum and 10 to 15 minutes from the port, with round-trip transport included. They are accompanied excursions without a tour guide.
- Scilla Experience, 5 hours: the fishermen's quarter of Chianalea, the view of Castello Ruffo above the village, the swordfish fishing tradition. From €40 per person, €32 for children up to 12, progressive discount up to 32%.
- Pentedattilo, 4 hours: free time among the stone lanes and craft workshops of the village. From €60 per person, €48 for children up to 12, 25% off from 6 people. In eight hours you can add the museum, which faces the meeting point.
How to get back on board in time
Plan your day backwards from the all-aboard time, which is earlier than the departure time on the schedule.
- Read the all-aboard time in the ship's daily programme and check whether ship time matches local time.
- Aim to be in Piazza Indipendenza at least one hour before all-aboard: the walk to the berth takes 10 to 15 minutes.
- Athena ETC experiences run on request and have no published departure times. Ask in advance and give the ship's name, the date and the arrival and all-aboard times, so the start is set around your call.
- Save the Athena ETC number on your phone: +39 379 14 92 736.
