The complete tour measures just over 4 km and the longest stretch, from the museum to the Arena dello Stretto, takes about 15 minutes to walk. You will find the itinerary stage by stage, a half-day variant and the times verified as of October 5, 2026.

Reggio Calabria day walking itinerary

It starts from the museum at 9 a.m., when it opens, and leaves the historic center in the afternoon. The Aragonese Castle reopens on weekdays at 2:30 p.m., so the order below avoids waiting. Distances are calculated on OpenStreetMap pedestrian paths at a leisurely pace (4.5 km/h).

1. National Archaeological Museum and Riace Bronzes (9:00 AM, 2 hours)

The MArRC is in Piazza De Nava, a 2-minute walk from Reggio Calabria Lido station. If you arrive by train, get off there: from the Central Station the museum is about 1.8 km away. The museum estimates the average independent visit at 1 hour and 30 minutes: count 2 hours to see all the exhibition levels calmly.

The Riace Bronzes are in the room they share with the Porticello bronzes. They are two Greek warriors from the fifth century BC, almost two meters tall, found in August 1972 at a depth of 8 meters off the coast of Riace Marina. Entry to the room is restricted and passes through a stop in a filter space, which serves to protect the statues.

2. Falcomatà Promenade and Arena dello Stretto (11:00 AM, 30 minutes)

From the museum, go down to Piazza Indipendenza and take the promenade southwards: you can get to the Arena dello Stretto in 15 minutes, about 1.1 km. The promenade is 1.7 km long and in the city they call it "the most beautiful kilometer in Italy". It runs on several levels, with Sicily and Messina in front.

The Arena is a Greek-inspired open-air theater, built on the site of the Porto Salvo landing, destroyed by the earthquake of 1908. On the marble memorial stone at the top of the bleachers, almost on the water, there is the bronze statue of Athena Promachos, the armed goddess in defense of the city.

3. Greek Walls and Roman Baths (11:45 AM, 20 minutes)

Continue along the seafront for 700 meters, about 10 minutes, to Piazza Camagna. Here there is the longest stretch of the Hellenistic walls of Reggio, closed by a gate and visible from the pedestrian crossing. According to the most accredited hypothesis, they date back to the mid-fourth century BC. About 300 meters further south you will find the remains of the Roman Baths, with the black and white mosaic floor.

For lunch, go up to Corso Garibaldi: from the Roman Baths Piazza Duomo is about 450 meters, 6 minutes.

4. Cathedral of Reggio Calabria (14:00, 30 minutes)

The Cathedral Basilica of Maria Santissima Assunta overlooks Piazza Duomo, on the Via Tommaso Campanella side. It was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1908 in neo-Romanesque style. In front of the façade there are the statues of St. Paul and St. Stephen of Nicaea, works by Francesco Jerace from 1934. From the second Saturday of September to the last Sunday of November in the Cathedral there is a painting of Our Lady of Consolation, patron saint of the city, painted in 1547. It is a church open for worship: it enters outside service hours.

5. Aragonese Castle (2:30 PM, 45 minutes)

The castle is in Piazza Castello, 350 meters from the Duomo: 5 minutes on foot. Despite the name, the structure is Byzantine, between the ninth and eleventh centuries. The two crenellated circular towers date back to Ferdinand I of Aragon and have been a national monument since 1897. Temporary exhibitions are held inside.

6. Piazza Italia and Corso Garibaldi (3:30 PM, 1 hour)

From Piazza Castello to Piazza Italia there are 550 meters, about 7 minutes. In the center of the square there is the monument to Italy by Rocco Larussa (1868); around you will find Palazzo San Giorgio, seat of the Municipality, the Prefecture, Palazzo Corrado Alvaro and the Cilea Theater. From here walk along Corso Garibaldi, the pedestrian area of about 2 km that goes from the museum to Piazza Garibaldi, in front of the Central Station. Along the main street you will find ice cream parlors and bars where you can try crêpe with anchovies.

7. Sunset on the waterfront (end of day)

From Piazza Italia you can return to the Arena dello Stretto in 10 minutes, about 700 meters. The seafront looks west, towards Sicily: it is the point of the city from which to see the sunset over the Strait.
